Hi @LRW7732, welcome and thanks so much for volunteering with HelpBerkeley.org! We would love to work with you. Our dispatchers have made you a event volunteer (evolunteer), and you can now access volunteer areas on the website.
As a event volunteer, you have access to many opportunities! Here are some of them:
You can prep and cook food . Specifically for Thanksgiving and the 2021 Holidays, they occur on Sundays, normally between 10:00am and 3:00pm or in shorter shifts, and on Mondays between 9:00am and 1:00pm. We do food prep in a huge hall that used to be a First World War Women’s Auxiliary hall, with about 30 foot ceilings, and enormous fans and vents. Everyone wears masks. We ask that everyone be vaccinated, and we check temperature on arrival.
You can package food , in the same location and conditions, on some Sundays and on Mondays.
You can manage driver pickups , outdoors, on Wed 11/24 between 11:00am and 3:00pm for Thanksgiving, and on Thu 12/23 between 11:00am and 3:00pm for the 2021 Holidays.
You can drive to deliver food to recipients’ homes , on Wed 11/24 starting around 1:00pm for about 2-3 hours, and on Thu 12/23 around the same time.
What would you like to do? Please reply to this message!
One of us will contact you in the next 24-48 hours as well.
Thank you for again for volunteering your time with us, we’re so glad to have you on board!
Hello Cameron,
Thanks so much for your very helpful and welcoming response.
Yes, I’d like to deliver meals on Wednesday 11/24. I do have a few questions first:
Are these deliveries in Berkeley only? Are there deliveries to encampments?
Can you tell me approximately how many households I’d be delivering to.
What is the process for the delivery? Do I ring bell or text and wait for a person to accept? Are the people notified when to expect their meal?
If I were also interested in food
packaging on Monday, where does that take place?
Thanks so much for responding to my questions,
Lynn R.
We’re really thrilled to have you driving for us! I will try to answer your questions here, but feel free to follow up with others or for clarification.
There are deliveries to Berkeley, Albany, and Kensington - there are no deliveries to encampments, only addresses.
You will be delivering to approximately 10-15 households.
We will be in touch shortly to schedule a brief driver training that will go over the whole delivery process and should make everything clear! Delivery instructions and a google maps itinerary will also be sent to you well before the run.
Thanks so much for your very helpful responses.
I’ll look forward to your driver training email. I’m finding the website a bit challenging for me to use so your emails are really great. I know you must be swamped so thank you for taking this time to answer my questions.
Could I do food packaging on Sunday, Nov 21?
Thanks again,
Lynn
No problem at all Lynn (@LRW7732) that’s what we’re here for - the website is tricky even for me. And that’s awesome, we’ll put you down for 11/21 and we really appreciate you volunteering your time!
There will be two back-to-back 3-hour shifts that day. The first is from approximately 10am-1pm and the second will be 12:30pm-3:30pm. You are welcome to do the first, second, or both! If you don’t have a preference I will just add here that we are a bit shorter on volunteers for the first shift, but we absolutely need help for both so no worries either way! Let me know what works for you.
